We all know that crime, especially burglaries, is a problem in the Highlands. The police do all they can but they need our help. The best way you can help is to participate in the Neighborhood Watch program. Residents come together to make their homes safer by watching out for each other and reporting suspicious activity to the police. The program is a very successful crime fighting tool.
The most important part of Neighborhood Watch is the Block Captain. The Captain talks with the neighbors near their residence and asks if they would like to participate in the program. The Captain collects contact information which is strictly confidential. It’s used by the Captain to distribute vital news concerning criminal activity. Once the neighbors have been contacted, the Captain has a short meeting with Arcadia Police Officer Mike Vercillo who manages the program.
The Highlands currently has twelve Block Captains. The much smaller Oaks neighborhood has thirty. We’ve set a goal to have at least forty Captains by the end of 2018. The streets where we especially need more Captains are Santa Anita Ave, Wilson Ave, Canyon Rd, Carolwood Dr, Highland Oaks Dr, Grand View Ave, Sycamore Ave and Elkins Ave. If you live on one of these streets, please contact us. If you reside on another street and wish to participate, we would also like to hear from you.
Each Block Captain will have a Neighborhood Watch sign installed on their street. These signs are an effective crime deterrent.
We hope you will want to be part of this important program. For more information, please contact Knut Dale, our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, at (626) 355-7644 or knut.o.dale@gmail.com
